Cronenberg Likes 'Transformers!'

So, I attended a screening of Eastern Promises tonight at the Harmony Gold on Sunset in Hollywood, and director David Cronenberg came out afterward for a little Q&A.

One eager audience member asked him, "How have you managed not to sell out?"

Cronenberg answered, "I've been trying to sell out. Give me $130 million and all those toys..." and then faded into silent reverie for a moment. A moment later, he piped in and said, "I saw Transformers, and I...kind of...liked it..." This seemed like something of a painful admission for him.

This from the guy that made Dead Ringers. Crazy. Hey, nothing wrong with it. I'm not criticizing. I enjoyed Transformers. It was entertaining. I just wouldn't have expected the guy that made Videodrome to like it. Life is full of surprises.

More highlights from the evening: As some of you out there know, Cronenberg made a film called Crash, based on the novel by J.G. Ballard. Several years later, a guy named Paul Haggis wrote and directed another movie called Crash, which won the Oscar for Best Picture. The Haggis film was not a remake. It just had the same title.

When Cronenberg's Crash came up in tonight's conversation, Cronenberg was quick to interject: "Not Paul Haggis' Crash," and called the Haggis film the "evil twin" of his own. Cronenberg went on to say, "I've told (Haggis) just what kind of an %$#hole he is."

I suppose Cronenberg's not afraid of offending. You'd never know it from watching his movies. Go figure.
